Christian Comedy and Jesus People

I am a huge fan of comedy. It allows us to look at reality. It relaxes us and gives us a new perspective while allowing us to forget some of the reality around us. You can see this in Colbert or Stewart's "news" on Comedy Central. Believe it or not, a large percentage of people now get their news from comic satires of the real news.

Christian comedy is harder than secular comedy. Modern, American comedy is heavy on satire and irony. Unfortunately, it is hard for some people to laugh at a satirical or ironic view of Christianity. I believe that laughing at ourselves is important though. It helps us separate the religious nonsense we all so easily substitute for a real relationship with Jesus. Good Christian comedy pokes fun at our failings while allowing Jesus to be who He is.

This video is from a new series that spoofs Christian bands. In our experience at LCC, we have seen plenty of bands that took themselves too seriously and failed to take Jesus seriously. This series clearly helps you see the line between self and Jesus. It is done a little like "This is Spinal Tap", and it is funny for the same reasons. It honors something larger than the musicians while poking fun at the narcissism among the bands.

This series has been controversial, however. Some feel it is poking fun at our faith. Check it out and see what you think.
